Curious About: Activated Charcoal
Is activated charcoal worth the hype?
People are sipping on black lattes, licking their 'goth' ice cream cones and chugging lemonade the color of the night sky all for the 'gram or maybe under the guise of 'detoxifying' their bodies. And when we're not putting it in our bodies, we're putting it on our bodies in the form of luxurious clarifying face masks, deep pore cleansers and black magic toothpaste for your pearly whites. And don't be fooled, it's not just women who are in on the charcoal grooming bandwagon.
So, WHAT is activated charcoal and HOW is that different than regular ol' charcoal used for grilling burgers? Should you join the trend or steer clear? Read up & make your own decision.
Activated charcoal has powers of absorption. But are the detoxifying properties legit? Here's what Discover Magazine has to say:
"Unless you’re drinking charcoal juice immediately after you’ve ingested some poison, drinking charcoal juice may not actually improve your health."
- Maybe avoid charcoal consumption before a hot date night. Activated charcoal might make your birth control less effective.
- Activated charcoal can wear away your tooth enamel. The American Dental Association is not smiling about this trend.
- Fight acne and unclog your pores from oil, dirt and other impurities with activated charcoal for your skin.
